Everyone needs a break!

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to sit on the beach in the late afternoon. Typically people have started to leave and there is this calm. I love to sit and read my book, people watch or even just watch the waves.  When I was young I used to do this all the time during the summer. We lived close to the beach and it was just so calming. As a mom, who has work and responsibilities this is almost impossible to do. Every year we take a trip to the Outer Banks and I make it a priority that at least one afternoon I get to do this.  I wish I could say that every day of my vacation I could do it but with over 20 people and hungry bellies you just can't. This trip I got to do it only one day but it was glorious!  It was exactly what I needed. With so many personalities and a lot of little KIDS, I definitely needed that hour to myself. What I have learn is that you have to make time for "you". Everybody needs that time to just reset, clear your thoughts and relax. Not only will you feel a stress release but the people around you will too!

Remote Working at its best (or maybe not depending on how you see it)

Family Vacation time is here! For many of us it means a week away from work, no interruptions, just kicked back and enjoying the beach and your family! For many others, it is almost impossible to make it happen. Taking time off of work is hard. Imagine trying to coordinate a time for 5 families to all agree on a week that works for them in their calendar. Let me tell you it isn't always easy and you definitely don't want to be the one that throws in the towel to say you can't go. As it comes time for another quarter end and knowing I still have a ton of work to get done before we are swamped it was definitely stressful. But being remote definitely makes life a little easier. Knowing that I can move my office anywhere is GREAT. Not only am I enjoying time with my family but I am able to keep up with what I need to at work too. Many people will say that is crazy, you took off and you shouldn't work. And I get it. But really it doesn't and can't happen with a lot of jobs. That is the hard cold reality of life. This week I get to see a couple of things. 1. I am not alone! I get criticized a lot about not taking time off. I like to consider myself loyal and on top of things. I am not working 16 hours day. I am putting some time in when everyone is still waking up and sleeping at night. I spent the whole day with my family. But as I look around in the early morning and late at night, for once I am not alone. My brother in law sits here every day working so he can keep up with his job. My husband gets up early every morning to make sure his office and team are running well. You can often find my other brother in law sitting at the pool with his laptop. The other night a colleague of mine messaged me and as we were chatting he mentioned he was sitting on the deck at the ocean. Here he was on vacation as well but working a little while everyone was sleeping. No I am not alone. 2. Remote workers are awesome. We know how to maximize our time. We are completely mobile and yet ever so effective. As long as I have my laptop and wifi life is good. 3. Technology makes all of this possible. So yes I am on vacation and yes I am still working. There is a happy medium. And I have to add, that if I could I would work every day remotely from the beach, even if I had to sit in my house and do it. Nothing beats the sound of the waves and the view.
